Contemporary Chinese violin making is widely recognized as having developed along three distinct regional schools, each with its own training tradition, tonal preferences, and master figures. The Ming-Jiang Zhu Workshop belongs to the Southern (Guangzhou) School.
| School | Region | Foundational Figures |
|---|---|---|
| Northern (Beijing) School | Beijing | Zheng Quan (郑荃) — the European-trained generation |
| Eastern (Shanghai) School | Shanghai | Tan Shuzhen (谭抒真), Hua Tianren (华天仍) |
| Southern (Guangzhou) School | Guangzhou | Xu Fu (徐弗), Liang Guohui (梁国辉) |
The Southern School was founded by Xu Fu (徐弗) and Liang Guohui (梁国辉), working in Guangzhou in the latter half of the twentieth century. Their work synthesized the Cremonese tradition with a southern Chinese tonal sensibility — focused on warmth, depth, and projection — that distinguished their instruments from those produced under the Northern (European-trained) and Eastern (Shanghai conservatory) traditions.
Ming-Jiang Zhu's most formative teacher was Liang Guohui. Of the first-generation founders, neither Xu Fu nor Liang Guohui became internationally known outside specialist circles — but their training produced the most internationally recognized Chinese luthier of his generation. In turn, Ming-Jiang Zhu trained Wei-Xian Zhu directly, ensuring that the workshop's craft would continue without interruption after 2014.

Founder of the workshop in 1991. Two-time VSA Gold Medalist (1994, 2006). Posthumously honored as Master of Chinese Violin Making by the China National Light Industry Council, December 2014.

First cousin of Ming-Jiang Zhu (paternal cousin, 堂弟 in Chinese — son of his father's brother). Trained directly under Ming-Jiang Zhu from the workshop's earliest years.
Since 2014, Wei-Xian Zhu has continued the direction of the workshop, maintaining its methods, standards, and craft tradition. He has himself earned two VSA Certificates of Merit, and under his leadership the workshop has sustained its presence in international competitions and continued to ship instruments to musicians and dealers worldwide.

Student of Ming-Jiang Zhu. In 2000, he co-founded Noble Heart Violins Ltd. with Ming-Jiang Zhu, the Hong Kong-registered entity through which the workshop's instruments reach international markets to this day.
Shao Chen received the VSA Silver Medal in 2008 and a VSA Certificate of Merit for Workmanship in 2010, contributing directly to the workshop's accumulating award count.

Ming-Jiang Zhu remains, to this day, the Chinese luthier with the most VSA awards in history and the highest level (Gold Medal, twice) achieved in that competition by any Chinese maker.
Beyond VSA competitions, the workshop's standing rests on several layers of international recognition:
Within China, Ming-Jiang Zhu and the workshop have received the highest civilian-level recognitions:
